Not so long ago I came across my grandpa’s old Sherlock Holmes magnifying glass tucked inside one of his favorite books. He used to love reading with it and upon holding it in my hands again, a flood of memories came rushing back to where I was a child. In the experimental stage of my life I used to nick his magnifier and round up some friends and we would set off into the woods.
Of course back then we did not realize the danger of playing with the magnifier and had to endure many a harsh lecture on how dangerous it was. Well unfortunately we couldn’t resist it and when the opportunity arose we would slip out and starting burning leaves.
It was only recently we I remembered those days when I started thinking about the magnifier and it significance. Did you know that way back in 1021 it was written about already. I am sure it dates back even further to when glass was produced in Italy. There must have been people who found that looking through a curved piece of glass it would appear bigger. How you see things will depend on how far you hold the lens to an object. The closer you hold it the less it would magnify. The further away you hold the more magnification you can obtain.
There a two methods for getting the optimum use from the lens. You could hold it close to your eye and move up close to the object using your eye and lens and the same time. The other method is you could hold the lens close to the object and adjust the focal point with your hand until you reach a desired magnification. This way is not dependent on the eye but on the distance of the lens to the object.
By getting the best focus from a lens you should start by holding it close to an eye and moving towards the object slowly until it is clearly displayed. Another good way is to hold the lens close to an object with the eye a larger distance away because the focus does not depend on the eye’s position.
How it actually works is when light passes through the lens, then it’s speed also changes. This action bends the light whereby making the object look larger (because only the light from a small area is focused). The framed lens is usually mounted to a stand and keeping the lens at the right distance from the table, and therefore at the right distance from the object on the table. Some magnifying glasses are foldable (from the handle or stand).
The most popular name asked for by people is the Sherlock Holmes magnifying glass and it is sold with focal length of 25cm and would be labeled as a 2x magnifier.
